WEETALABAH GELBVIEH

Genetics. Performance. Consistency.

Weetalabah Gelbvieh was established in 1999 after the Nixon family saw the outstanding results Gelbvieh genetics were achieving when successfully crossed over Hereford, Angus and Black Baldy females in Australia. What began with a belief in the breed’s potential has developed into a proven, family-owned Gelbvieh operation based at Dulacca, Queensland, running approximately 60 red and black Gelbvieh females.

The Nixon family brings with it generations of cattle-breeding experience. With Aleacea and Lyall continuing the family tradition, they will become the fifth generation of the family involved in cattle breeding. This depth of experience, combined with a willingness to continually evaluate, learn and introduce new genetics, has shaped the Weetalabah program and its focus on producing cattle that are relevant to the modern Australian cattle industry.

From the beginning, the aim has been clear — to develop Gelbvieh cattle that are suited to Australian conditions and can deliver in the paddock, not just in the show ring.

Built for the Australian Environment

Our cattle are run under tough commercial conditions on grass, with calves receiving no creep feed or assistance prior to weaning, apart from access to mineral licks. Our cows are expected to do the job themselves — calve, milk and raise a calf through the challenging seasons of the Dulacca district. This environment is an important part of our selection process. It quickly identifies the cattle that can genuinely perform, maintain condition, raise a calf and continue to do their job year after year.

Our focus remains on breeding cattle that are quiet, structurally sound, fertile, functional and easy doing. We place strong emphasis on maternal ability, high-milking females, sound compact udders, medium frames, soft and smooth skin, and cattle that are predominantly polled. We also place great importance on producing low-birthweight calves that have the ability to grow, thrive and perform.

Carefully Developed Genetics

Our herd was initially established using carefully selected Australian Gelbvieh genetics. Over the years, valuable trips to America and Canada have allowed us to continually source and introduce award-winning and performance-proven genetics into the herd.

Our objective has always been to introduce genetics that offer something different and, where possible, remain an outcross to the genetics already available in Australia.

The result is a balanced combination of carefully selected Australian, Canadian and international bloodlines, together with proven and successful home-bred sires. This has allowed us to build a herd focused not simply on appearance, but on performance, longevity, functionality and commercial value.

Proven in the Show Ring

Since first showing at the Ekka in 2004, Weetalabah has almost every year had one or more of the major Champion awards, providing a remarkable record of consistency over more than two decades.

A particular highlight came in 2015 and again in 2019, when Weetalabah cattle won both the Grand Champion Female and Grand Champion Male awards.

More recently, our home-bred sire Vector has demonstrated the consistency we strive for in our breeding program. Vector first won Grand Champion Bull as a nine-month-old in 2025 and returned at 21 months of age to win Grand Champion Bull again in 2026.

To us, this is more than a show result. It demonstrates the consistency, quality and longevity we are aiming to breed into our cattle — cattle that are capable of performing at different ages and stages of their development.

Vector will now return to the Weetalabah herd to be used as a home-bred sire, continuing the genetics and performance that he has already demonstrated.

Genetics That Work Beyond the Stud

While show-ring success is a valuable benchmark, our cattle are ultimately bred for the commercial producer.

Weetalabah genetics have been sold throughout Australia, New Zealand and Paraguay and have found their way into a wide variety of breeding programs, from stud herds through to commercial operations.

Our bulls have successfully been used over Brahman, Angus, Droughtmaster, Hereford, Simmental and many combinations in between. This ability to cross successfully with a wide range of cattle demonstrates the versatility of Gelbvieh genetics and the adaptability of the Weetalabah program.

Our aim is to produce cattle that can add value wherever they are used — whether as a straight-bred Gelbvieh, a stud sire or as part of a commercial crossbreeding program.

The Bulls on Offer

The bulls we are offering in this sale come from the heart of the Weetalabah herd and contain generations of successful, proven genetics.

Both bulls are black-hided, but carry the genetics to produce both red and black calves, giving commercial producers the best of both worlds and the flexibility to breed in the direction their program requires.

These are bulls we are proud to offer. They represent the type of cattle we have worked towards producing since establishing Weetalabah Gelbvieh in 1999 — quiet, functional, structurally sound cattle with the genetics, performance and adaptability to work in a range of environments and breeding programs.

Our Commitment

We are proud to stand behind the quality and performance of our bulls and offer a guarantee on every bull we sell. We want our clients to have confidence not only in the bull they purchase, but in the genetics and breeding philosophy behind him.

To all our past and present buyers, thank you for choosing Weetalabah Gelbvieh and for the confidence you have placed in our family and our cattle. We genuinely value the relationships we have built with our clients and appreciate the opportunity to contribute to their breeding programs.

We look forward to continuing to develop our genetics, producing cattle that are relevant to the Australian industry and building a program that can be carried forward by the next generation.

With Aleacea and Lyall set to become the fifth generation of the family involved in cattle breeding, the future of Weetalabah Gelbvieh is firmly focused on continuing the traditions, experience and values that have shaped the family, while continually looking forward and developing genetics for the next generation of Australian cattle producers.

Thank you for your support.

Warm regards,

Aderian, Julie, Aleacea & Lyall

HISTORY

Julie and her parents Ian and Gay Rabone founded Weetalabah Gelbvieh Stud in 1999, after preparing cattle for Steve Sullivans, SJ Stud at Warrumbungle with the purchase of a female, SJ WILLY R21, from his dispersal sale. Since then females have been purchased from Norolle at Millmerran, Glenisa Stud, Glen Aplin and Glendale Gelbvieh stud, Serpentine WA.
Currently Weetalabah runs approximately 70 head of Gelbvieh females.
Our Gelbvieh females are predominantly polled, they all have quiet temperaments, structural soundness, are easy doing, have neat compact udders, are high milkers, medium framed, soft and smooth skinned, producing low birth weight calves that explode.

Sires have been sourced using semen from Canada as well as natural bulls both bought and bred. In 2011 Weetalabah purchased Norolle 2R Emperor E95 by RID R Collateral 2R bred by Alison and Clyde Johnson for $9,000 at the 2011 Qld Gelbvieh Sale. Emperor has left a line of extremely functional, great uddered, dark females. We then used a bull out of  Norolle Shady Lady B45, by Spur Berreta, Weetalabah Josey Wales . Josey has left us with an outstanding line of females and bulls that are highly sort after. Homebred sire  Weetalabah Lumberjack , a bull out of one of our top Ultra Violet females by McCoys Signature.  National Champion Bull RWG Right Combination 5103 ,  we purchased as semen from Canada. He is a multi award winning bull in Canada and America, selling progeny to $44 000US. In 2019 we bought the Australian Semen Rights in The 2018 Canadian National Champion AWB Birch's The Boxer 21D,  which we had previously used and he is producing some awesome females. Recently sons of Right Combination and The Boxer are being used with great success. RIVERSLEIGH TEDDY Purchased 2024, and first calves born feb 2025 are shaping up to be outstanding animals, with the extra length, depth with and amazingly quiet Temperament.

Weetalabah Voom V017 ET. A result from a flush from Kamila and Enigma in Canada. A total outcross bull with his first calves hitting the  ground in August 2026.

Recent purchase of BNH Dream Come True purchased the Australian Semen rights while visiting Canada in January 2026.
